From the depths of Mid Canterbury - Fly Fishing the Rangitata River

The Rangitata River is a large snow feed river originating high in the Southern Alps and flows out of the hills across the plains into the sea south of Ashburton. It along with it's tributaries it provides very good fishing for Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and Salmon for the knowledgeable angler. The mouth can produce some nice sea runners and the main stem is mostly the domain of the salmon angler. Though when the river is low opportunities increase for the fly angler, the area below the Gorge around Mt Peel can produce trout. The main area of interest for the Fly Angler will be above the Gorge where at times the fishing can be very good.
