Southland
The Southland region is renowned for it's superb brown trout fisheries. The shinning light in this region is the Mataura River and any visit to this region wouldn't be complete without a cast or two in it's fabled waters. The Mad Mataura rise is something almost unique in New Zealand as trout greedily scoff down the masses of hatching mayflies. There are numerous other low land brown trout fisheries to explore. The upper reaches of the main rivers offer good backcountry fishing. Further west the Fiordland area offers remote wilderness fishing for the skilled and adventurous angler. | |||||
