A very nice read Mike. If I do encounter a lot of bad weather atleast I know that there is still lakes to be fished when rivers are filled up and dirty.

An awesome weekend on the lake with 32 to the net... an article on my blog.
Something I was pondering today after a few missed strikes... I had a few fish missed when they cruised towards me and took my nymph, on the lake on some flats around 50cm deep and next to no flow.... I cast to the inside of the fish to have them let it drift down next to them before taking hence facing directly towards me. When the indicator dipped and I saw the mouth close, I struck as normal to have no connection... I varied my strike a little later to better effect, I struck sideways! Any thoughts???

I dont think it makes much diff personally. The trouts mouth is closed, you strike, you hit him. However maybe the strike is slightly delayed giving the fish enough time to eject the fly enough to pull straight out, whereas in the same sitch in a downstream strike, you may hit the lip or something as the fly is pulling away / out. Are you still 'overhead dry fly striking'? If so, there is always a momentary stage of slack line as the rod tip rises into an efficient striking position. Try a low, sideways strike with the rod tip so you contact immediatly without too much slack, or if overhead striking lift the slack with the rod tip whilst striking with the line hand. a quick, short strip strike will also do it, and if contact is made and the hook set, then lift the tip. Benefits of this is that if you miss him, there isnt too much disturnabce of line lifting from the water, the fly jumps forward several inches to a foot-ish and the fish may hit it again, particularly if using a damsel. My thoughts anyways.

I always try to strike up to try to make contact with the upper lip, figuring that going in any other direction is pulling it pretty much straight out of its mouth. But have never seriously tried to work out if it provides more hook ups or not, just theory...

I normally strike straight up, I find in very slow sections (nearly no flow) the fish directly facing me on the take is the most likely to not get a hook up. Some of it maybe the odd double mouth action, when the fish takes the fly then seems to take a gulp of water to flush it down... maybe a little to much slack in my presentation compensating for a faster flow in a small channel between me and the fish? Or maybe just fishing Next time I'll focus on keeping a tighter line and see what eventuates...

Had an awesome day fishing a wee stream with rainbows climbing all over themselves to munch on a "Simon's Ugly" in red and green Got a blister from a loose boot after the lace snapped, broke the clip on my landing net so it wouldn't hang off back... had to carry it around and lost my camera for awhile after the loop holding it to my vest gave way Lucky for me I found it back down stream after about 10 mins looking! Landed an insane number of fish and had a play nymphing a short line and feeling the take... fantastic day! I'll put up a couple of pics once I upload them later
