I've been a fisho for some 30+years, but until last year never got to fly fish. That all changed in 08-9, I was shown the basics, and got out there.
Though getting time away was all ways a burden, I managed to land half a dozen fish over a couple of months and lost too many.
I need so much more practice with my casting, but i gained some confidence with the tools.
My highlights for the season would be: 1. watching my fly get taken for the 1st time + landing my first trout on a fly. 2. Taking my son trout fishing and watching him enjoy the experience of catch his first ever trout.  (i'd load an image but don't know how at this stage)
Looking forward to the new season, and getting back into the fishing in Oct.
Anyone know of casting class in Christchurch, Cheers Mark

Hi Mark,
I don't know if Chris has any plans to come up to Christchurch, he'll know doubt jump in here and let you know, otherwise try Chappie Chapman, he runs some classes at times, you can contact him from here

Hi Mark,
Congratulations on your first season, nothing like that first fish on a fly :-).
I'm a FFF Certified Casting Instructor, like Chris and Chappie but with considerably less experience :-). I'm looking at getting some teaching experience under my belt before I swing into full commercial mode. Although I'm not in Christchurch (up the road at Mt Lyford, near Waiau) I am in Christchurch once in a while and we could meet up to look at your casting. Mark Rodgers at Fisherman's Loft is also a FFF Certified Casting Instructor and does some lessons, he could be worth talking to as well. I've had lessons from both Chappie and Mark (and Chris for that matter) and would recommend any of them.
Do you belong to the Canterbury Fly Fishing Club? I joined last year, they're a good bunch. The club has casting clinics at times (Chappie usually does one before the summer season starts) and I'm looking to get some casting lessons and such happening. They also have a mentoring program which may help you get ahead more quickly, nothing like going fishing with someone who knows what they're doing :-). The club site is at:

Hey Mark - congrats & welcome.
I would advise:
1. Join CFFC as Jo suggests above - we meet every first Tues of the month, location map on the website - just turn up next month!
2. Get it touch with Chris Dore for expert casting tuition, see http://chrisdore.webs.com/flycasting.htm

Hey Mark,
He He…better still - join the Canterbury Anglers Club...3 huts in choice fishing locations, regular trips away and a Fly Casting night at the Groynes pre season.
Plenty of like minded people to go fishing with whether it’s fly, spinning or salmon fishing with a bit more of a family emphasis than other clubs around.

As someone who has been at it a couple of seasons now, I'll throw in my two cents worth. I'll begin by saying that I regard myself as "beyond beginner, maybe not quite intermediate".
First, join a club. I belong to the North Shore Fly Fishing club in Akld and have picked up a hell of a lot of helpful info from those guys. There is no shortage of advice out there and club members (maybe by their nature) are very willing to help beginners. They are also great at giving advice on "where" i.e. the #1 problem I have as a beginner - where abouts exactly on the river to you go?? Reading a map is usually no more than an introduction to the problem....
Second, follow this forum, again a hell of a lot of advice to gain, brains to pick...etc
Third, re - casting. Chris Dore has given me useful advice via this forum, and I was able to get my casting out to 60' consistently but I would love to go to his "next step lessons" to get beyond the beginner/intermediate stage. (Geography prevents....) However, other advice I received was to forget distance and concentrate on presentation and short distance accuracy. The golfing analogy was used by this fisherman - most golfers go to driving ranges wanting that extra 20 yards or whatever, wanting to smash the skin off the golf ball, however, most would get far more benefit to their golf game by practising their putting. So it is with flyfishing (or so I was told) - there is far more return from getting short distance accuracy (30-45') and subtlety (gentle fly line landings) than from getting that extra 20'. Besides, buggered if I can see that big indicator beyond 60' and I'm struggling to see that dry fly indicator beyond 40'.
However, part of me would still like to cast 100' AND present gently and accurately.
That's the trouble with fly fishing. Too many "experts", too much "advice". Somehow, you have to make sense of it all for yourself at some stage.

Hi Mark, congrats on your first season of fly fishing. I've organised the mentoring trip to Twizel for the Canterbury Fly fishing club for the past 4 uyears and heard plenty of stories where newbies havent landed a fish for years before coming on the trip....youve done well mate so again, congrats.
For the record, we have 2 organised casting clinics in Aug. 1 for begginners and another for more able casters. Chappie will run both of them and they are held at the groynes. We are also discussing possibilitie of hooking up with Jo for some extra casting efforts.
We hope to have 10 - 15 members complete thier FFF CI cert in the next 12 odd months but this depends on a few things yet.
The idea is we then have a pool of people in the club with that extra bit of knowledge who can help out with some confidence. We also have monthly trips which we encourage new members to attend.
At the end of the day though, whether you join no clubs, 1 club or a couple, get out when you can and most of all enjoy your time on the water.
