hi tomh...
...i'm going to try and give the increasing salmon run a nudge in the Wairau this year. using a 4-6kg CD Albagraph Lite and a gold Abu TC 7000. i've loaded it with light braid with a 5 meter trace. ...i know you might have to kill me afterwards but...can you provide any clues as to the best lure and weights. i'm thinking of mooching around just up from the rivermouth and bigger pools upstream.
...any tips greatly appreciated!
regards Ross

Ross, whatever weight it takes to have it on the bottom. If you are not regularly tapping the bottom, you're not deep enough. And have it swinging or retrieving through the pool/run as slowly as possible. I am a colorado spinner man usually, though Z spinners are probably more popular. Good luck. Dan

yeah mate colours and weights are a big part i normaly use a rang between 12 gram zeddies to 24gram zeddies i only fish zeddies to normaly white or silver seems to do it for me and depending on the water try to always stick to the bottom tapping your spinner on the stones for me iv always hit fish on the swing so i just cast directly straight out from me across other side of hole and let it swing around tapping on the stones instead of casting upstream slightly and retrieving slowy along the bottom still with spinner tapping the bottom i also never retreive my zeddie i cast out let it hit the bottom keep in contact with zeddie and let it drift through then when its up on the edge retrieve slowly as sometimes you hit fish in close when winding it in also when water is low and clear i tend to try fish very light gear small zeddies not to blingy and also drop down to 10lb yozuri normaly i use 15lb all depending on the peice of water though all the best i hope this all makes sence lol

...thanks guys, much appreciated,
...i had a bit of a dabble at it last year and can see some of my errors now. i didn't keep the lure on the bottom tapping the stones. i brought the Albagraph after reading some positive reviews but for me...its feckin horrible. it feels like it needs a sash weight on the end to get any movement at the tip. cast a 24gr zeddy with it and it feels like a broomstick. ...iv'e just been watching Malcolm Bells Complete Angler promo vids on softbaiting the hydro's, i think i will "invest" in a different set-up with a bit more feel and probably go fixed spool so i can cast zeddy's and lurk around Twizel and Tekapo like the rest of New Zealand and the world will after viewing Malcolms videos.
thanks again
Ross

I recommend anyone new to salmon fishing to give Ross Millichamps's 'Salmon Fever' a read. Full of helpful hints and info. I am happy to send you my copy to read Ross if you can't get your hands on a copy.

...hi Hooked up...
..thank you very much for the offer...but i've got some serious holes in my game. Very shortly...i'll be able to throw my feckin rod further than the zeddie and get more pleasure out of it. ..its better suited as the "mother in laws" mode of transport!
regards Ross

Good questions Ross and great answers guys. After seeing a few big salmon in small streams at the end of the season may have a bash at them myself. Those soft bait vids make that a tempting option too as drive past that way reasonably often. Better get there before the fish run out
