For 50 years I've thought of chasing salmon but the high country trout have always taken priority. Now, with lots of spare time I can do both. But what I need is unbiased advice. I've read the books and browsed the tackle shops but just like buying a new fly rod, it is hard to decide................ Particularly when one knows stuff all about salmon fishing! I definitely don't want to fish at river mouths so do not need a massive stick. I have seen an Abu 6600 Brute Gold reel with a 7' Berkley Gorilla Sticki plus braid for $299 as a "special". That reel has a fast (6.3:1 retrieve and holds 155yds 20lb line. Also could be a good light salt water reel. Would anyone care to comment? Am I heading in the right direction?

Hi Dave,
Sound like what you are looking at is not far off the mark. I've been using an abu 6500 c3 with a 7 foot Enforcer by Kilwell. Quite old now, the reel is great, easy to use . The rod is nice and light weight and a good length (though Kilwell made them too light to start with and they broke!!) I don't know if it's still made. It's a great set up, you get good 'feel' through it. I was brought up using big long fiber glass rods and egg beater reels, thankfully they now reside in my garage roof destined never to leave again. Having a well balanced light weight set up is far superior. I haven't trried the Gorilla Stick, you want something with a good tip, so you can flick the lure out nice and easy, but with enough back bone to handle something BIG.

I'm looking for something for myself. I'm not sure if I want Braid or Mono.
What is available out there for under $100 all in?

Far better to buy one top quality item than a heap of cheap junk if cost is a factor. That is - one good 6 weight fly rod is much more satisfying to own and use than having a cheap 5 and a cheap 7. I ended up buying the salmon package mentioned in my earlier post but it can double as a light boat rod and reel. The two birds with one rock trick. Wasn't impressed with the shop tho'. I am as green as grass when it comes to this salmon stuff and took the assistant's advice re line and spinners. Result - I have 12kg line (like a ship's hawser when compared to my fly tippets!) and 22gm Zed spinners. A combination that I have found to be very difficult to cast. I think that braid or lighter mono would have been better. Lots of tackle shops in Chch. but where can I get good, friendly, helpful service and reasonable prices? Flyshop has been great but isn't into the salmon and sea bits yet. (pat on the back, Steve)

try fishermans loft or Hamills on Columbo. Both very friendly and knowledgeable. Best is the fact the Hamills has a childrens play cupboard full of toys so you can take the kids and leave the Missus to her own devices in south city mall.

I've been looking around some of the sports shops in Chch over the last few days and quiet frankly was very dissapointed in choice of equipment. I don't do a lot of fly fishing these days but use a small Daiwa 5'6" Firewolf with an ABU sm 3000. I started looking at salmon rods and was very disapointed with the choice. It might be that as the salmon season has not realy kicked in this may have something to with lack of choice. However I did notice a Sage salmon rod in The Fishermans loft. Not cheap but this rod looked a million. Just don't recall the rod specs. So if anyones wants something out or the ordinary............I'm tempted myself but I have three Firewolfs and love them all. The 5'6" I have a 8' Firewolf for salmon and yes my fly rod is a Firewolf too. The other is a Fenwick #10

Same question asked several years ago on AK Outdoor Journal. Check the link below guys. If you need help finding the gear below send me a personal email. These guys dredge lotsa salmon..... 5 species from fast water. I am advocating more salmon fisheries in New Zealand. Why not?
