Hey there guys, iv decided that im getting too old (and burnt) for baseball caps, so have decided that its finally time to bite the bullet and buy a "gentleman's fishing hat"
Iv seen a few of our US visitors wearing hats similar to these http://www.paddypallin.com.au/clothin....th.html There seems to be a few places on the net selling these types of hats, but a hat is an item id prefer to try on for sizing and style. Has anyone in the Otago or Southland areas seen a shop that sells these kind of hats?

The brim doesn't look that large. I use a Huntech one that has a similar sized brim. I do find it better than a cap.

HEHEH Really when you come down to it im a Yorkshire man that's lived in "Stralia" for a long time, so no the hat with corks hanging down wont be coming out .
Yea Mike, the brim on that particular one is a bit small. Just wanted to show that one to give people the idea. Iv got a hat similar to that huntec hat, but i find in the wind the brim folds back

One thing I've never changed since I moved here is my big brimmed fishing hat.

I also have a waterproof hat and a light canvas hat from Outback Trading Company. You should be able to find something suitable there: http://www.outbacktrading.com/shop/category.aspx?catid=6
I find the big brim also aids in keeping glare out when spotting fish.

Fraser,
Have a look at the Columbia Bora Bora that Steve has - it's a good hat. You should be able to locate one in Element in Frankton to try for size.
Another good option is to look around for Selke Hats - they are made in AshVegas and are usually available in tourist traps. They supply the hats for Hamill Fishing and Hunting. They are getting quite dear though so be prepared to spend a bit. The Ghillie and Airhead are popular amongst the fishing set, but be warned that the Air Head shrinks over time...

Fraser, the trouble with new hats is that they don't catch any fish. They need time to develop their essence (or is that odour) and hence their fish catching ability.
You can shortcut the process by letting the dog play with it, soaking in dairy effluent ponds and leaving outside in the rain. But ultimately it needs time on the river to infuse it with mojo.
It never pays to be too hasty about making a major decision like changing hats...
