Why are salmon farms here not suffering the same issues as in Europe, Canada or USA?

I would imagine it's not a matter of 'Why' but only a matter of When.

I love this line in the article

"In our mind, sea-farming of trout is one of the best opportunities to expand aquaculture and would be economically viable,"

Best oppertunities, more like the Easiest. All the research has already been done by either the 100+ years acclimatisation soicetys, and the trout farms overseas.

"Recreational fishers' fears that this would cause problems including trout disease and mass escapes had proved unfounded. "

I thought there was problems though with not the salmon but the sea floor beneath the farms having excess nitrate build ups, and subsequent die off of organisms living under these farms.

I dont eat fish, but why anybody would pay for a trout is beyond me, there is plenty of better tasting fish on the market. Are they still pursuing the Kingfish farms off Great Barrier? I would of thought that would be a much bigger Return on Investment.
There needs to be a lot of investigation before this will be approved, In saying that, if Sanford can show Mr Key the money, and/or job oppertunities from what would be a realtively easy modification. he would roll on the Converstaion Act 1987 faster than you could lose $20 in Aucklands new pokey machines.
A very real threat indeed.

Once again the salmon farms and government officials show their true colors.

A new virus is found in canadian farmed salmon by biologist.

Salmon farmers and government officials are contradicting claims by biologist Alexandra Morton that a newly identified virus is causing a debilitating disease in farmed salmon.

Biologist asks to do test on fish at the farm...  Guess they will say no to that...

In Orkney and Norway now they are transforming salmon farms to grow Atlantic Cod, because that species is in a decline, and it's a more popular food source.

Salmon farms in the hydro canals have a huge flow of water through them but the inshore sea pens will have problems.

I don't eat trout either. sweet chill tuna does the trick 4 my lunch. I can't see that anyone would want trout over what is already available in nz. Its just not a great table fish imho. I can't imagine what effects this could have on recreational fishing...........

It's not the local market we have to worry about, realistically we would make up maybe 20% max. It will be the export markets that make the money for them.
Trout farms are nothing new, Anglers have been fighting them off in NZ for years - Soon we may need to make some noise.

Cheers

Yeah when you put it like that ill help make that noise. Hopefully Key doesn't get onto this issue, that tool is only out to make coin. And will stuff anything in his way. Funny how no just doesn't seem to mean no...
