I grant, Tore, I probably wouldn't fish a #14 parachute on 3X but, like you, I think a tungsten bug would be fine...
Glenbow, you are correct, often though some are more correct than others . I meet a lot of anglers who when some of these things are pointed out to them will respond with a "well it works for me" response which is totally acceptable, until they are not catching fish... some even then will claim "it works for me".
Scott rods... you don't have to buy anything, you get a felt tip pen and write the x number on the spool if it doesn't have it. Subsurface, Streamer, dry fly, the same thing applies. The X system applies to all tippets in freshwater it's got nothing to do with floating or subsurface, though of more importance to unweighted flies. it still applies to weighted flies, but you'll be able to use heavier tippet with these <---- see my first point agreeing with Tore.

Oh and i forgot to say that I use Clark's pattern for the cicada. Shop bought of course. I can't be bothered tying it.

I've had a lot of breakages this last couple of outings to 5x and 4x rio powerflex. Is this common with this tippet?

I took it back to the loft today and Rob tried it. It did indeed break easily, so he replaced it immediately. He said he's seen it sometimes in a bad batch.

After a bit of a lay-off I tried using flurocarbon again on a trip to Waikaia and Mataura. I usually use Stroft mono, But as I was Using small flies tried the flouro again, Rio Flouroflex Plus 5x and 6x, lost two fish changed back to 2kg Stroft, no more breakages whilst still applying the same amount of pressure (tree roots don't you know) the ease at which the flouro broke was very disconcerting. Knots were lubed and pulled up tight, Double blood to join, uni to hook. This is the reason that I stopped using the stuff last time. Its in the bin, I have no confidence in it anymore.

Hi Mike.. pleased your trip went well.. Ill have a word at club , you can tell me how many you really lost!!!! Re the Rio Floro Plus.. thats all I use now only one breakage this season ( undetected Wind-knot) more vigilant now ,which has paid off... the only knot used on the flouro is the uni-knot. thats on the hends ring and the eye of the hook.... Ill swop you a reel of Stroft 2.2 kg .14 mm for a Rio F C Plus 5x.... !!!!!!. Mac
