Hi guys,
I usually make up my own tapered leaders (yes, I'm a tight arse ) for fishing in Oz. I use about six different diameters of Maxima to produce a leader and it seems to work fine.
I'm heading over to NZ for a week in Jan and was wondering if the knots pose a problem in the clearer waters you have there?
Regards, Rick.

Hi Rick,
I met an Australian here once who used his own hand tied leaders ( something about Ozzies? ;-) and he caught plenty of fish.
Regards,
Jo

Hi Rick,
I used to tie my own. I don't think the knots would be a big issue, but the reason I used them was to create a better longer taper to help with turn over, particularly for windy days. The reason i stopped was because when guiding, clients would tend to get more tangles with tippet catching on those extra knots.
What I use instead are the heavier tapered leaders like the Umpqua Power Taper, they have a heavy butt section and a more even taper.

Yep, Can't be bothered tying leaders. A lot of Europeans seem to like them.
I use a mono tapered.

I tie and use tapered leaders on my shorter 6 to 7 1/2 foot 3 - 4 - 5 wgt rods Never had any issues with them or the knots. Hand made leaders just seem to turn over a whole lot better for the shorter rods on small streams and close quarter fishing and I can custom make the length and taper I want from scratch. Works for me anyway.
For those that may like hand tied leaders, a very good book is "Drag Free Drift - Leader Design and Presentation Techniques for Fly Fishing" by Joseph Kissane. (Fishpond has it) A fair proportion of the book discusses leader design. Some very very interesting and revealing stuff in there. It was recommended to me recently and I wish I had got it years ago.
Plus it has the "LeaderCalc" CD with it which gives bucketloads of the various knotted leader designs and measures. I think that LeaderCalc is also available via globalflyfisher.com

I agree with Steve, I use a 9-10 foot power taper of 10lb then cut it slightly shorter so it tapers to 0x then add sections of 1,2,3and 4 or 5x to bring it out to 15-20 odd feet depending what I'm after. Turns over real well.

Used to make all my own leaders ,from several sizes of Maxima. a good start/learning curve.... Now I just use Rio T/Leader 9ft . 3X 2X.. and cut and trim to suit.. very happy with the set up Once the Hends ring is in place... Its mainly , at least 6ft of Flurocarbon,,whatever size is dictated.. Leader Cal site Johnno mentioned is brill.... Mac..

In my opinion making your own knotted leaders is the only way to go.. i start with a 10 ft umpqua mono leader, chop off all the finer tippet ant start building... Also i nail knot half a metre of 60 lb to the flyline to aid extra turnover.... Usually I only change my leader annually too.... When building your own leaders, and i rebuild every trip, you can devise what you want for where you are, i never go on any particular design just add bits as i see fit, using experience to guide..
In recent years ive become a fan of weight forward leaders, only way to acheive this is by self building.. these are great for turnove of small dries on 20'+ leaders..
But as a thought i can think of several occasions ive actually had trout come up and nail the knots in my leader, i had a double figure fish do this in the wangapeka one day, silly prick still hooked him too haha...
