I'll often make wing cases for various nymphs out of plastic bag. Cheap as chips and very easy to use!

(The serrated edge can be elimiated by using straight edged scissors. Its not a biggie and I doubt that the torut will notice)
Make the fly as per normal and tie in the wingcase..

Then colour the plastic slip with a Pantone marker or similar. The main colours I'll use are darker brown and dark olive. Sometimes black. Colour the INSIDE of the slip. This keeps the upperside nice and shiny.

Finish off the rest of the fly and pull over and tie off the wing case as per normal and you done.

Now any tier woth his salt should have this. Variety of uses.... A lot of chemists will stock it.

You can further shiney up the wingcase with it..

The beauty of the plastic wing case is it is transparent, even when coloured so one thing I like to do is put some mylar flash under it. I don't like loud flash, preferring something a little more subtle and this fills the bill nicely...

The pics dont do it justice, but the effect is quite good....

The plastic slip can also be used for segmented bodies. Either coloured or clear. The underbody will come through real well. A quite good application is with midge bodies using a pearl or (even better) opal mylar

Awesome stuff Johnno! I've used the same technique on stonefly's...works great, just wished I were more proficient...my flies don't look anywhere near as good as your ties. X 2 That Sally's Hard as Nails is great.

Cheers Johnno.
I noticed that the flash & colour show up so much better when the cement is fully cured. Glossy. Will be tying a few more

Now that's a GREAT tip.
I've used plastic bag material a lot too - cheaper than buying "shell back".
I too colour it with markers, and then SH. However, I often have a problem with the marker colour reacting with the SH.
Colour the inside of the plastic....
Now there's a cunning plan! Thanks!
(another good wingcase material is the stretchy translucent straps attached to the inside of women's clothing - what they use to hang the ephemeral wisps of fabric off the clothes hanger in the shop.
Most women I know cut them off when they get the clothing home, and throw it away. I've asked my wife and sisters to pass them on to me. Great stuff.)[B]
