Greetings from Vancouver Island, B.C.

I will be visiting Queenstown for the month of January with  my wife and and an old fishing friend. I would be most grateful for any information about fly fishing opportunities in the general area. We willl be staying a few minutes away from Lake Hayes so that water would be off particular interest along with Hayes Creek and the Kawarau River. We will have a car so transport will not be an issue. If communications are easier by  way of a PM my email address is petermcmulllan@shaw.ca.

Many thanks,

Peter McMulllan, Nanaimo B.C.

My apologies....previous Queenstown query post should obviously have been located in the Fishing in New Zealand section. If Mods like to move it that's fine by me.

Cheers, Peter

Na no fish in the Queenstown area Peter.  Best to head to the north Island and hit their fish up! :D

I'm a local mate.  Some nice fish in lake Hayes. some lovely wadeable water in there.  Kawarau holds some good fish, but its a big fast water and has the tourist jetboats screaming up and down it quite literally every 15 min, so not a water id recommend to you.

If you have transport then don't limit yourself to just the waters in residential areas like Hayes.  Some magnificent rivers less than 40min drive from town are open January, and its a great time of the year to be here, fishing wise!

Drop me a line closer to when you arrive and i can recommend some waters that are fishing well.  I probably will have some time to take you out for a fish if you like as well?

If you need a guide, there is only one man to see!! Chris Dore. Top bloke and about the best dam guide in the whole country.

Hope that you don't mind company and fizz boats - its school holidays and the area will be full of loopies - and some of those loopies will be forum members on holiday!

Seriously - get in touch with Chris Dore as its his home 20. And be sure to check out the Lakes District Museum at the bottom end of the main street in Arrowtown, plus the other main feature of the main street, the Arrowtown Bakery - the Lamb Mint pies are to die for.

Good but not as good as the Venison Pie's IMO!

Now iv eaten a few pies in my time and was told before i moved here that the AB pies are the best in the world.  I highly expected to be disappointed.

I’m now the one telling everyone else that there the best pies in the world! :D
