There is heaps of good fishing around there and the locals like to help out with info. Some of the best, if not the best Barra fishing in OZ is about 1.5 hours away at Awoonga Dam and the Boyne River. Big big bastards!!!

Hi Mattyd, great to hear that you managed to find some good info. It is a highly underrated fishing area well worthwhile visiting. There are something like 2500 fish species, of which 250 are considered sports fish. You can just walk a beach, chuck in a streamer and catch dozens of different fish. If you catch a flathead, keep it and eat it. A very tasty fish and cool on a fly rod.
If you happen to be In Tannum Sands one stormy evening, fish the mouth of the Boyne River well into the night, maybe with surface lures. I lost a huge Barra there last year. He straightened my big hook. Some good Queenies and Trev’s there as well.
My favourite fish where black kingies on surface lures. Well worth it if you get the chance to go out with a boat.
Have fun!!!!

Haven't fished the area myself but suggest you have a look at this forum and possibly ask the same questions. You may even find some of the local swoffers will take you for a fish, they're a generous bunch.

Good luck!!

Thanks For the Info guys, much appricated. I have a lot to learn about Oz, the map makes Rockhampton to Arlie beach look like a quick drive up country, more like 5 odd hours I may have to spend more time up there than I had planned - What a shame
