Hi guys, my first post on this site and i just looking for some ideas on options for over winter.  i have done most of my fly fishing thus far in streams and small rivers and have never done any lake fishing so i am thinking of trying something different over winter.

so i am keen on any advise on winter shore line fishing or if you could point me in the direction of any good articles that would be great also.

i have a couple of different set up one 5/6wt the other 8wt and both are spooled with floating line is this suitable or are sinking lines the go for lake fishing?

also do i need to get myself a descent set of waders for winter or can i fish from the shore? the idea of wading out into unfamiliar lakes in the darkness of winter doesn't really appeal to me at this stage.

thanks in advance for any help

If you can afford $20 buy the Rotorua Anglers book edition 7  as it has all the details about fishing the lakes as well as useful information on wind and timing.I have found it useful even though a member of the club and am told a lot of the information ,I would be losted without it as a reference. Can get it from most book shop or sport stores .

here are the the flies i have tied to have a play with over winter.

i have a question about adding weight, when fishing at stream mouths where there is current i am thinking i would need to add some weight to get flies down to the fish, when fishing still waters do i add any weight if so how much?

They will work nicely, couple of nice no moon flies there pig. Just add a couple off lumo doll flies and small black wets and you will be away laughing.

dont worry about weight for night flies round here, the buggers you have there will cover that, most of the fish you  hook will be in around 1 meter of water.

you were eyeing that storm up last night were'nt you lol

see you out there mate

i guess i should give some feed back, i have had a couple of chances to come over for a fish this winter. decided to fish rotoiti. first attempt was a windly night, head wind at the pipe end of the lake. i decided to fish away from the other anglers, ruato bay and the pipe were busy so i fished   in a sheltered spot near the old dump site, caught my first lake trout. only 3 1/2lb but i was very happy with the result. second chance to come over was a very still and bright moon night even more anglers out but the spot i fished the time before was free so i fished there again. no luck but i didnt hear any action going on form the other angler either.

more a matter of fishing when i can rather than at the optimal time at this stage but i am sure they will cross paths at some stage :)
