Hey all,
I'm heading back to Nz this weekend after 6 months overseas and will be in Taupo for a couple of weeks, catching up with some buddies and tying up some loose ends before heading up to Auckland for a while. Of course, high on my list, is getting in as much fishing as i can while i'm there as i've missed it like you wouldn't believe while i've been away!! Anyway, i was wondering how it's fishing at the moment? Anyone give me an update...?!

How did you get on? I was supposed to be going bush next weekend but it looks like the weather isn't going to be too flash aka rain for almost a week! Backup plan is to go have a nosy around some Taupo rivers and mouths and see if we can hunt out some large browns.

Heading down Wednesday arvo, still have our fingers crossed that the rain for the weekend isn't going to eventuate so at this stage we're sticking with the plan to hit the backcountry but who knows what will happen.

Just a quick bump for those interested in the area, heading down Thursday afternoon for the weekend. Will have a good dig around the TT, the Hine and the rivermouths so will update when I get back. Hasn't been much rain at all and the weather is looking pretty settled so it might be hard going in the rivers but I'd expect the night fishing in the rips to be good. Got a special little stream (trickle) that I'm hoping will produce some for the smoker.

Yup! Can't wait to get away and out of the city. A friend of ours is buying a full kit and this will be his second time fishing so a bit of time will be spent helping him out. Fortunately he's one of "those guys" that picks up everything super quick and he'll be good to go after a day.

So just a quick recap. Weather was amazing all weekend, not sure if the 'now with 10% extra" full moon slowed down our river mouth fishing but only had a couple of hits, that said we only fished the change of light each night before heading back to the house the get the fire going and have a few brews. Fished the TT on Friday, river is looking in great nick for the winter. It was low, really low and clear so long leaders and small nymphs were the order of the day. We found a couple of great runs where we all hooked up, I had a dropsie day with six hooked but only one landed. Our buddy who was new to fishing landed four and dropped three which was definitely the highlight, he was unstoppable! Definitely plenty of good fresh fish in the system but they were very, very flighty. A good fresh will clean up the bottom nicely and push through the huge amounts of fish that are stacked up at the mouth. Oh to be on the spot when that happens. Saturday we went for a wander up the Hine, again any a few fish landed but plenty seen and spooked throughout the day. Weed was a real problem and you needed to check your flies every couple of casts, a bit of volume should clear it out and give anglers some cover and more of a chance . Saw some really good specimens in there too. Highlight was definitely the Waimarino though. From the moment we got onto the river we were spotting fish and every pool held a fish at least. They were a mix of nervous fish and some more settled feeders which gave us more of a chance. Sight fishing dry and droppers with small flies was the way to go and it must have been second cast and my mate was into a good 3.5pd fish. Next two casts saw fish rising to the dry, one strike was missed and the other was on and then busted off. We only fished a couple of hours but it was great fun and you would have thought it was March by the way it was all looking. I ended up taking a really nice, fat 4.5pd hen for the pot so will smoke that one up tonight. All in all the fishery is looking really well set up for winter so it's very encouraging. The fish were in good to great condition and had plenty of fight, hence so many fish that got away!
And the best, and unbelievable part, we only saw one other angler the whole time we were there.
Bring on the rain.
