After I finished my first build, I was confident I'd learnt enough to take on something else. Something more expensive.

I've always liked the idea of owning a switch rod and learning how to use one, so I might as well build for my second project.

It took a while to settle on the blank. Needed some help with this, and so I was in the ear of Chris Dore every five minutes asking for advice, and Tore was kind enough to help me out too. Thanks for that guys, much appreciated.

Anyway... I finally ordered my blank. An 11 foot, 7 weight switch blank from CTS in lemon yellow.

A couple of weeks later it arrived...

Unfortunately I had to disappear off to work soon after that, so I couldn't start immediately. The next morning I set about getting the bottom end sorted.

It took forever to ream out the handle, but I got there in the end. I used a shim underneath the reel seat instead of binding with thread, I found it was much faster and tidier.

I left it all to dry and went away to work again.

It was another couple of days before I could get back to working on it. I had planned on using blue bindings, but before I got properly underway I had a play with red and blue together, to see how it looked.

It turned out quite purple looking, and I knocked it on the head pretty quickly. It might be worth a try in the future in the right colour combination.

I reverted back to the blue bindings and finished them with metallic gunmetal trim wraps. There was a bit more to wrapping the guides on this rod than on my first project.

Eventually I got the guides wrapped and moved on to epoxying. I had to do it in two parts, due to the length of the rod.

Its all finished now... I'm reasonable happy with the end result, although I had a couple of dramas while epoxying the bottom section which nearly sent me to the nuthouse.

I learnt plenty more from this build, lessons which will help me when I undertake my next project. Next on the cards is a 5 weight which I hope to have made in time for the new season... the only trouble is I'm still trying to decide which one?

In the meantime I need to learn how to use my new switch rod!

If your ever down QT way Grinch, drop me a line.  Id love to have a proper look at that rod.  I'm half thinking of building it an identical brother for myself.
