Bloody good Steve.

Perhaps  the (fly) rod building fraternity is seriously under-estimated in NZ...?

Steve, I guess the next step will be to stock rod building components in the shop.......    :;):

Anyone making their own reels?  :)

Nice one Steve!  :)

I know a guy in Norway who makes his own aluminium reels, fly tying vise and titanium reel seats. Very impressive!

Steve

Thanks for establishing the rod building forum. Any chance you will be stocking some rod building parts in the future??

Anyone know somebody who can turn the wood reel insert with a lathe in New zealand?? I am thinking of making reel seats with New Zealand native trees, kauri burl and rim burl n'stuff.

Flyfishing is my life and that is what I am here in New Zealand for. Nothing is more important than flyfishing IMO.

Hmmm, I picked up a lump of petrified? wood out of secret creek I was thinking of using for that too. When I say petrified, it was turned into a blackened "coal" when it got, I assume, covered by ash when Lake Taupo erupted. It might be too soft though.

Tom, if you find someone to turn some native timber for you, I'd love to get in on the action. A nice piece of kauri turned across the grain would look superb I think.

My partners grandfather has a lathe which he plays around on - he uses it to make clocks apparently.

I have turned a few reel seats. I learn't it all from this DVD (highly recommend it) which can be purchased at mudhole. I have not turned one for almost two years now though. Not hard to do but would be very hard for me to explain here.
