3boysb, I tied up some of your free living caddis on the weekend. I found that using 2 strands of ostrich herl gave a better look to the gills. Very happy with the results, but the hook I was using (Black Magic G) didn't give such a pronounced curl. What hooks do you use?

Hey uptream,

The ones I used for the swap were a mix of Tiemco and Kamasan.....the kamasan were a shrimp/buzzer hook....the shank is ofset to one side and gives the flies a sort of twisted look.
I also tend to tie caddis as far down the hook bend as I can go.
Will post the hook code when I get home tonight.

Did you tie in both gill ribs at once or seperatly??

Hey Stu,
What do you use for the full length back  case on the Physco??? It gave a nice effect.

Probably Thinskin etc, or a thinnish plastic bag strip or similar darkened (or not) with a waterproof marker.  The latter is cheaper than chips and just as good as anything else.

Hey Adrian, was offset so must have been the Kamasan I got. A wickedly seductive curve.

I tied the two herls together. Was a nice light herl as you suggest. I guess the lighter herl is from the female ostrich (hen?)

This has a back of a thin strip of cut-to-size plastic bag ribbed with a grey 2 or 3 lb mono.  Coloured black with a water proof marker (Pantone) at the head end.

Grey rabbit/antron mix body with a couple or three turns of ostrich herl at the head.

Yep Mine used a plastic zip lock bag too.

Upsteam,   Kamasan b100 sixe 12 Shrimp and buzzer hooks.

Hey Johnno where did you get the pantone markers?? I have read a lot about them but never seen them around??
I use a heaver mono...8lb I tend to tie with a bit of a heavy hand and tended to cut the plastic with lighter mono.
Thats a nice tidy fly tho.

I have no idea about sex of the bird sorry....now thats a weird statement!!

I have the plastic case quite wide so it pulls under the fly a bit and sort of flairs the ostrich gill rib out a bit.....sort of... the thoughts there anyway.

Yep. It is thin skin. I gave it enough width to wrap around the sides of the nymph to accentuate the gills under body. The ribbing is spanflex wrapped real tight.

where did you get the pantone markers??

Whitcoulls in Peterborough Street ChCh had 'em for a while.  I wouldn't know if they still do or not.   There was also a specialist art shop down the southern end of High Street (or was it Manchester? Can't remember now) that had them.  Quite expensive but they do have a great range of colours in many different olives, greys, tans etc etc.  They last a long time.  I have some that would be at least 10 - 12 years old and still go strong.  Some also have double ends, like one end is a wedged tip and the other end in a fine tip.

If you just want a black, go for something like one of those waterproof fine tipped markers you can get almost anywhere.   Good as anything.

The ribbing is spanflex wrapped real tight.

Stu: Is Spanflex the ribbing you use on the Green Stoner?
