Hi I am planning a trip to the northern part of the south island ( Reefton-Murchison) the first week in December. I have been visiting New Zealand many times before, but never so early in the season. Is there anything I should think of when going at that time?
appreciate any suggestions Rene Palmer

Hej Rene. I am also swedish and live in gothenburg, been doing some shopping from you over the years
I been to NZ during November and december months, I tell you that its pretty awesome if you are lucky with good weather. The only change from visiting nz in nov-december, is that the weather is more unstable maybe? Fishing is really good during this time of the year, if weather holds up. More rivers to fish due to more water in the smallest of rivers and less angling pressure.
Be flexible if bad weather hits. There is always places to fish if your willing to drive a bit for better weather.
I am sure that others will chip in with good advice, but thats all I could think of that is different.
Cheers Robert Hakansson

Bring rain jackets and always have back up options. Fish will still be up our smaller streams. Snow melt could maybe be still affecting main rivers. It can rain a lot and rivers can blow out quick - dont get caught out miles up a valley somewhere - even mid avo snow melt can make a river uncrossable.

Rene, I was in southland from mid november till just before xmas.
I was blessed with wonderful weather, I think I had like 4 days of rain in total. The cicadas started arriving at the start of december and the fishing went from amazing to even better and most importantly easier fishing.
I guess that if you have good weather, you might have some cicada action in early december.

In this area ( Reefton) I think you'd be very lucky to hear a Cicada before mid January so if the Cicadas in Southland are doin' it early December, then you should definitely go there.

You'll be really wanting some different sizes of nymphs, big streamers and some generic dries such as para-adams if there is a wee hatch, blowfies, humpies.
