Hi guys,
I am heading over to Hanmer Springs area and then Reefton in January and wanted some advice on dealing with the sandflies as I hear they can be pretty bad.
What should I bring with me by way of repellent and protective gear?
Any other advice about deterring these little critters would be most welcome.
Regards, Rick.

Cancer society do a suncream with insect repellent. So far it's worked 100% for me - Stu#71 had 80% DEET spray recently on a trip and got bit 5 times. I had none.
Steve sells this cream in his online shop.

You also wear a buff, cap, tights, and gloves so where could you get bitten.

Hi,
I try and cover as much skin as possible. After coming back from Reefton a couple of years ago I bought a net which fits over my hat. It's a toss up between whether sandflies on your face are annoying as the net.
I've found Bug 'n' block sunscreen with insect repellent to be good for most sandflies. For some places around Reefton I had to spray Bushman's Friend on my shirt and hat to try and keep the blighters at bay.
Regards,
Jo

I like Skin Technology bug juice and as the others have said cover as much as possible, I use fingerless sports mittens which provide protection for knuckles on your hands which are a favourite target of sandflies and the most irritating of bite spots. I would advise against polyprops around Reefton in favour of wading pants as wasps will be beginning to kick in and the majority of stings I get, apart from standing on nests, seems to be when they encounter polys, seems they get a bit tangled in the fibres and panic. Changing to a pair of loose rip stop nylon pants has reduced the number of stings I get around here.

In the Caribean we use to put Baby Johnson's Oil, it says that the sand flies can't go through the oil coat. I wonder if its work in NZ...

Take a good antihistimine. No matter what you do - they will get you.

I use Ben's 100. It comes in a little red bottle but expensive at $14.95. The little fookers love me & this works well BUT you've got to cover every single piece of exposed flesh, else they'll get you. I have had bites behind my watch strap, in my ears, even on my ass!
They'll get you whatever...
Soov is a good cream for afterwards - helps the itching!
