Wellington/Taranaki The Wellington region offers four major fishing rivers including the famous Rangitikei. The others are the Manawatu, Ruamahunga and Hutt. There's very scenic wilderness/back-country type fishing in the rivers within the Kaimanawa, Ruahine and Tararua Forest Parks. In other areas the rivers and streams flow through hill country farmland and lowland river plains. All the rivers and streams contain brown trout, and some also contain rainbow trout.
Most Taranaki trout fisheries have their source in the melting snows of the Egmont or Tongariro National Parks. Many small to medium sized trout streams radiate from the base of Mt Egmont/Taranaki to flow through farming land. Access is good and there's a wide variety of fishing opportunities. The Wanganui area has a number of lake fisheries that provides good rainbow trout fishing.
While the Ruapehu district has some of the most productive rivers in the Taranaki area with the Manganuioteao offering a top angling experience and is a nationally important brown and rainbow trout fishery | | | |
