During Winter there is some fantastic fishing available particularly in the Taupo Area of the central North Island of New Zealand. With the Tongariro River in particular being very productive. This fishing is mainly for the winter run Rainbows as they run up the rivers out of Lake Taupo on their way to spawn. The main form of fishing is nymph and indicator style, using egg patterns in particular, often in combination with a heavier 'Bomb' to sink them down deep. Wet Lines or 'Wet Linning' is also affective; using sinking lines and wet flies to cover the water.
So much has been written about this region, the home of New Zealand trout fishing. It's so well known and cherished by so many. Names like Major Jones and Judges just make you want to pick up your rod and go....... Taupo's has cemented it's name as one of the worlds leading trout fishing destinations. A self sustaining rainbow and brown trout population, easy access, year round fishing and an abundance of choice makes it a popular area. A long fly fishing history has meant the development of many flies patterns specific to the region.
