Salmon
The South Island's east coast is the place to catch a NZ salmon, the main rivers are the Waimak, Rakaia, Rangitata and the Waitaki plus the Opihi has some good catches at times. You'll want reliable gear, the river environment can be quite harsh and tough on your equipment. Salmon rods need to be able to cast a reasonable distance and handle a heavy fish. Most Salmon are caught on Zed spoons or 'Zeddies' so they are the favoured tackle. And you must fish deep as that's where the salmon are so expect to loss a few. Fishing is best just as the water clears after a fresh when 24 or 28 gram lures are used. As the water clears you'll need to use lighter gear. The fish are most active in the early morning and again in the evening
