North Canterbury

The North Canterbury region stretches from the Rakaia in the south to the Clarence River in the North. The eastern plains are bisected by the large snow fed rivers which have very good salmon runs at times. They also contain a number of smaller rain fed rivers, though many of them can run low or dry during hot summers. The high country area offers plenty of backcountry fishing for the adventurous angler. Many waterway contain rainbows as well as the browns and some of them become ‘very big trout’ in the ‘Mouse Years’ North Canterbury also has many excellent still waters throughout the high country areas

Selections of Caddis, Mayfly and Terrestrials imitations all work well. If it's a mouse year you need some of them. Many terrestrial patterns work well on the still waters. Brown beetles can be prolific early in the season
