Flies of the Month
My pick for some useful flies for February |
||
|
The cooler summer has meant they've been slow to arrive but they should be about in good numbers on hotter days. The Cicada's a must and don't forget about the Buzzy Blowfly as both will catch a heap of fish this month!
All of the larger terrestrial patterns will work, so make sure you are armed with plenty. The fish will have seen plenty of flies by now so often it's something a little different that will work, and going small is a good tactic
On the willow lined streams it's Willow Grub time & don't forget the consistent produces like the Adams parachute, Dads Favourite and emerger patterns if there are mayflies in evidence |

Nymphs that are useful include the usuals listed below. The fish will have seen lots of Gold beads by now so it's a good idea to start using the Black Bead heads and fishing two nymphs together is effective, one bead head to sink a smaller nymph down into the fish's zone. |

|
Hare &
Copper Black Tungsten
My favourite nymph, #16 is a killer! |
Hares Ear Rubber Legs | Pheasant Tail |
| Pogo Nymph - Stu's | Hare & Pheasant Black Tungsten | |

High country lakes are open, these (below) are consistent producers and don't discount the terrestrials, they can be very affective too at this time of the year |

February is often a settled month and should see terrestrial insect activity at it's peak.
